Lorna Whiston School's four-year Secondary English course provides the ideal preparation for the 'O' Level English examination. Developing student competence and confidence is the key to success and our highly stimulating programmes achieve just that. Written by a team of experienced professionals, all of whom are familiar with the Singapore secondary school system, it is designed to develop the student's competence and confidence in English language, helping them attain the best results possible in their school exams.

We also recognise the importance of preparing students for entry into higher education which is why our programmes encourage mature critical thinking and debate about important topics such as global environmental issues and current affairs.

Secondary 1

For children 12 to 13 years old
Class duration 2 hours

Lorna Whiston's Secondary 1 English programme helps children make the transition from primary to secondary school both in terms of approach and curriculum content. Students gain greater independence and are equipped with all the skills they need to reach their maximum potential and excel in school exams.

In Secondary 1 we build confidence in the following skills:
  • speaking more clearly using standard English
  • listen and respond to stories, poems and other literary stimuli
  • participating confidently in conversations, group discussions, problem-solving activities, group presentations and debates
  • reading and understanding a wide range of written texts in different genres and apply critical analysis to their reading
  • summarising texts within a given word limit
  • experimenting with different writing genres and styles, including narratives, discursive essays, reports, reviews, articles, instructions, explanations etc
  • plan, draft, write, analyse, evaluate, edit and improve their writing
  • using a broad and expressive vocabulary in both speech and writing
  • learning to deduce new word meanings from context
  • understanding and using a variety of tenses and sentence structures, and develop a strong knowledge of grammar

Secondary 2

For children 13 to 14 years old
Class duration 2 hours

Lorna Whiston's Secondary 2 English programme centres round carefully selected, age-appropriate literature and is successful in developing students' language skills in the key areas of reading comprehension, summary, speaking and writing. There is also a strong focus on the development of effective study skills and exam techniques.

In Secondary 2 we build confidence in the following skills:
  • giving clear and interesting oral presentations, putting forward opinions and reacting appropriately to the opinions of others, and speak clearly and accurately
  • reading and understanding a wide range of written texts in different genres and apply the skill of critical analysis to their reading
  • read age appropriate books confidently and with understanding, and be able to read for gist (the general idea) and for specific information
  • identifying topic sentences and key ideas in a text, infer meaning from context
  • systematically synthesise information form texts and infer logical conclusions
  • summarising texts within a given word limit by paraphrasing effectively
  • developing ways of taking relevant notes that can serve as a revision tool for exams
  • writing in different styles and genres, including narratives, discursive essays, newspaper articles, formal letters and proposals, and website content
  • plan, draft, write, analyse, evaluate, edit and improve upon their writing
  • organising and linking written ideas and use a range of literary conventions, develop arguments logically and cohesively, and use a range of sentence structures and idiomatic language in writing
  • using a broad and expressive vocabulary in both speech and writing

Secondary 3

For children 14 to 15 years old
Class duration - 2 hours

Lorna Whiston's Secondary 3 English programme focuses on developing the students' skills in the areas of speaking, reading and writing, and lays the groundwork for the 'O' Level examinations, focussing particularly on how to approach the reading comprehension and composition papers successfully.

In Secondary 3 we build confidence in the following skills:
  • giving clear and interesting oral presentations, interact effectively in groups and deliver speeches in an engaging manner
  • skim, scan and identify relevant information in a text, and deduce the meaning of unknown words from context
  • understanding a wide range of written texts in different genres and apply the skill of critical analysis to their reading
  • identifying topic sentences and key ideas in a text, and infer meaning from context
  • summarising texts within a given word limit by paraphrasing, abridging, linking ideas and editing effectively
  • taking relevant notes and create mind maps that summarise key ideas
  • writing in a variety of styles, including descriptive, informal, formal, imaginative, personal, impersonal and factual
  • plan, draft, write, analyse, evaluate, edit and improve upon their writing
  • organising and linking written ideas and use a range of literary conventions, develop arguments logically and cohesively, and use a range of sentence structures, idiomatic language and metaphors in writing
  • using a broad and expressive vocabulary in both speech and writing

Secondary 4 & 5

For children 15 to 16 years old
Class duration - 2 hours

Lorna Whiston's Secondary 4 & 5 English programme focuses on enhancing the students' skills in the areas of comprehension, composition and speaking. Crucially, we fully prepare our students for their 'O' Level English examinations by providing them with invaluable, direct exam practice.

In Secondary 4 & 5 we build confidence in the following skills:
  • demonstrating a high level of fluency and accuracy when describing pictures, holding conversations and expressing opinions
  • speaking clearly and accurately when expressing their ideas and opinions
  • discussing current affairs knowledgeably using mature, critical thinking skills
  • using a variety of reading strategies to tackle reading comprehension
  • infer the meaning of unknown words from context
  • identifying relevant points in a text and paraphrase these ideas to create their own summaries
  • taking relevant notes and create mind maps that can be used as revision tools
  • writing in different genres, for different audiences and on variety of topics, including narratives, argumentative essays, discursive essays, reports formal and informal letters and proposals
