Head of Curriculum
Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Victoria, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from the Academy of Languages and Training Canada
I'm Sara Stillman and I'm the Head of Curriculum at Lorna Whiston Schools. I was born and raised in a large family in British Columbia, Canada. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Victoria and hold a Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certificate from the Academy of Languages and Training Canada.

I've been teaching in Asia since 2003. My first teaching position was in rural Ibaraki, Japan. Since then I have also had the wonderful experience of teaching children and writing curriculum on Jeju Island and in Seoul, Korea before calling Singapore my home in 2012.

Working with experienced local and foreign teachers in Singapore enrichment centres and in a Singapore public school (where I did volunteer outreach) allowed me the opportunity to learn about the Singapore Ministry of Education system. This, along with research, additional teacher training and the many valuable discussions with my students parents, has helped me understand the challenges local students face at school and the tools these children need to succeed. I joined Lorna Whiston Schools in 2015, and I feel very fortunate to be part of this great organisation.

Language learning has always been very important to me. I was an extremely shy child with a speech impediment who could not wait to learn to read books by myself! I recall how literature opened up new worlds to me at a young age, and how a teacher helped me with correct pronunciation so I could be a confident speaker. It therefore brings me a lot of personal and professional satisfaction to do my part to extend the gifts of literacy and confidence in oral communication to children.

In my free time, when I am not lounging with my cat Forrest, I adore Park Connector walks and hikes around the beautiful green spaces in Singapore. I still love to read books, especially about philosophy, social science, nutrition and the brain. I also enjoy interior decorating, indoor gardening and catching up with my friends and family.
