Tara McGowan
Bachelor of Arts with Second Class(Hons)
from University of Hertfordshire,UK
I first arrived in Singapore in 1998 and, after having taught English and History at a middle school in the UK for four years, I was looking forward to gaining some valuable experience of teaching English in an international context at Lorna Whiston Schools. My plan was to stay in Singapore for a couple of years and then head back home. However, like so many of my colleagues, I was really taken with Singapores rich, cultural diversity and her friendly people, and, so inevitably, Singapore ended up being my home for over seven years.

I finally returned to the UK in 2006 and became Head of Assessment at a preparatory school in Windsor. Inspired by my experience at Lorna Whiston Schools, my interest in critical thinking and philosophical skills also grew and, having attending a Philosophy for Children course in London, I was determined to incorporate some of the theory into my own classroom teaching.

Although I loved my job in the UK, the draw of South East Asia always remained with me, and in January of 2014 I made the decision to return to Singapore. I was based at United Square for the first year where I taught Creative Writing and English Enrichment classes, though my main role was within the curriculum team writing educational material for our overseas projects. I have also been involved in our teacher training and Outreach programs in local schools. In January 2015, I was appointed Head Teacher at United Square Level 3 and Parkway Parade.

Away from work, I enjoy running, cycling and playing badminton. I have also taken advantage of the many walking opportunities offered by Singapores beautiful parks. I have more sedentary interests too, which include reading crime novels and drinking tea! I am also studying for an MA in Education (Teaching and Learning) with the University of Bath.
