Individualised Reading Programme at Lorna Whiston Singapore

Losing yourself in a book is one of life’s great joys. Reading allows us to be immersed in different worlds and learn about cultures distinct from our own. We can also learn new words and phrases, experience various emotions, and acquire skills and knowledge.

Given its immense learning benefits, reading is crucial for young children in the following ways.

- Positive impact on their cognitive development: Through reading, young children gain a deep understanding of the world and background knowledge that is beneficial in helping them make sense of what they see and hear. Besides extensive vocabulary, young readers tend to be more imaginative and have higher concentration levels.

- Boost in mental health, empathy and social development: By placing themselves in the main character's position in books, young readers learn to empathise and process their emotions. These traits enable them to better relate with others and build stronger relationships.

Trusted by Parents, Enjoyed by Students

At Lorna Whiston, we believe in the power of reading and the literary arts. We have created and curated a programme where the environment allows for inquiry-based, collaborative, and focused learning. We foster the development of a child’s natural and innate curiosity for learning by immersing them in a multisensory and multidisciplinary environment. This is why we are the school of choice for young learners seeking to develop their language and literacy skills.

Nurturing Life-long Love of Reading with
Lorna Whiston

When it comes to preschool language and literacy, children develop specific abilities at different times, rates, and ways. Each child has a unique combination of aptitudes, learning needs, interests and skills.

Our Individualised Reading Programme has been developed to focus on helping our students as young as 18 months understand the nuances of English and Chinese languages, ensuring that they will gain the same linguistic abilities as native speakers.

This Programme also builds on students’ vocabulary bank, enabling them to be good communicators both in writing and speaking by giving them a plethora of words to choose from. Students will begin to understand that words have power and will be empowered to use the new words they have learnt to effectively communicate with peers and adults, building on their confidence as public speakers.

The hallmarks of the signature Programme are:

Access to Extensive Library Weekly

Every week, children are encouraged to select books from an extensive library that is lovingly curated according to literacy levels. Your child will read many books at that level until he/she is completely fluent and able to read with understanding.

Initial Assessment for Personal Level Matching

Each child is given an initial reading assessment upon entering Lorna Whiston Preschools. The comprehensive reading assessment encompasses vocabulary knowledge, letter identification and understanding of frequently occurring words to provide an accurate measure of your child’s reading ability. After that, they will be placed on a level appropriate to their abilities.

Regular Assessment and Promotion

Our teachers carefully monitor the progress of the students and promote them to the next reading level once they are ready. Understanding the words, expressions, and the storyline is the key to achieving fluency, mastery of decoding skills, and correct pronunciation.

 Building Confidence Through Relevant Activities

Age-Appropriate Play

Our passionate and caring teachers build mastery of the language through milestone-appropriate activities.

For Nursery children, they will learn to recognise their name, rhythm and recite familiar songs and poems. Teachers will help children understand simple directions and common phrases used in routine situations. Children will also appreciate stories and be encouraged to respond verbally to a simple picture story. They will also be encouraged to share their personal experiences with others in simple sentences.

For Kindergarten students, we aim to nurture a foundational love of books and reading. Each lesson is based on a theme and an exciting story. The children enjoy a host of language development activities based on the story. The Programme aims to give children a genuine grounding in the language and literacy skills needed to succeed in primary school. Students will read age-appropriate books with understanding, master phonics to blend the words, retell stories in their terms and use personal experiences to conduct show and tell.

Safe and Nurturing Environment

Our teachers provide a safe and nurturing environment that enables children to develop an innate curiosity about the world around them. This positive learning environment allows children to express themselves creatively and master communication and literacy skills.

All of our loving teachers are professional, certified and fluent bilingual educators. Every teacher in our organisation undergoes 60 hours of comprehensive professional development each year. This means they're constantly growing in their skills and knowledge to guide and motivate your child.

Holistic Learning Throughout The School Day

Programme themes are carried out throughout the school day for children to internalise their learning by forming links to real life and through opportunities to practice what they had learnt. We also encourage the creation of teachable moments outside the classroom in partnership with parents through shared resources.
