Lorna Whiston Preschool and English Enrichment Centres
Kindergarten

When students reach Kindergarten, we aim to nurture a lifelong love of books and reading, establishing a solid foundation for the language and literacy skills they’ll need in primary school.

We use books and stories to engage the children's interest and as a springboard for developing their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.
  • For children 4 to 5 years old
    Class duration:
    Weekday - 1.5 hours
    Weekend - 2 hours
    Class size:
Weekday - 10 children per class
Weekend - 12 children per class

Students begin Kindergarten 1 reading simple books, learning essential spelling patterns and writing basic sentences of their own composition. When they finish Kindergarten 2, students will be able to speak clearly and in complete sentences, as well as writing short stories and learning how to work effectively in groups and with each other—everything they’ll need when they transition to primary school.

In Kindergarten 1 we build confidence in the following skills:
    • recognise a range of high frequency words
    • read simple books with understanding
    • identify all the initial letter sounds (phonics) and be starting to blend sounds together
    • appreciate stories and be able to retell a story in their own words
    • listen to others and participate readily in group work and class discussions
    • use a pencil correctly to draw and write simple sentences of their own composition
    • have a knowledge of simple spelling patterns when writing
    • use a sufficiently broad vocabulary to be able to express themselves clearly

This phonics-forward programme designed by our Lorna Whiston curriculum team helps children learn reading, writing and spelling, as well as improving pronunciation.

The children are taught to listen carefully to the sounds of words, to identify the sounds they hear and to relate them to the words on a page.

The programme is taught through a wide variety of fun, multi-sensory activities. Puppets, puzzles, stories, songs, rhymes, art and craft activities and phonic games all feature regularly, ensuring that phonics is taught in an effective and enjoyable way.

Students must be assessed by Lorna Whiston Schools before enrolling.

Students work towards longer, more sustainable presentations of rhymes and poems.

In addition, they are encouraged to use their oral language skills to solve problems posed through role-play adventures, and explore techniques of voice projection.
